HGH and Height in Humans

In today's society, many people yearn to be tall and are always looking for what can be done to achieve this. This desire is based on the line of thought that others admire those who are tall. It is a common thing to hear ladies expressing preference for taller men and this is enough reason for many men to pick interest in becoming taller.

While some of those desiring to be taller may be considered shorter than average, others are merely interested in increasing their heights beyond the levels that would otherwise be considered normal for reasons best known to them. The belief is that being tall makes you more confident and attractive. The use of human growth hormone (HGH) is one of the things some do in a bid to become taller. But how effective is HGH in promoting heights and what other techniques can help you achieve the tallness you desire?

Brief Information on HGH

As you could easily have guessed from its name, HGH is a hormone that plays vital roles in growth from childhood to the state of an adult. It enhances bones and muscles while also helping with the maintenance of cell and organ functions. The hormone offers several other HGH benefits to the body, including immune system boost. It is produced in the pituitary gland in the brain. Most children you see growing at a very rapid rate have abundant supply of HGH in their body. However, the level of the hormone starts to drop as people grow older.

The pituitary gland is most active in secreting growth hormone while your body is at rest, specifically when you are asleep. This secretion comes in pulses. There are two cycles of HGH actions. In the first direct cycle, the HGH receptors attach to target cells to help maintain cell function and enhance bone growth. HGH, during the second indirect cycle, is converted by the liver into a factor known as Insulin-like Growth Factor Type 1 (IGF-1) which influences target cells to enhance overall cell and organ function and health.

HGH deficiency could bring about several unpleasant or undesirable effects, which is why scientists have taken keen interest in the hormone since the 1920s when its importance for human growth and development was first identified.

Effects of HGH Deficiency in Children

Growth hormone is arguably mostly important in children, in whom a deficiency could lead to serious growth issues. There are instances where certain children suffer HGH deficiency right from birth as a result of certain medical disorders, including Turner Syndrome and Prader-Willi Syndrome. Shorter-than-average statures are among the symptoms of these medical disorders. Other symptoms that may also be exhibited include sight problems, obesity, poor muscle tone, persistent hunger, undersized hands and feet, and poor sexual development.

It has been shown in research that children with growth hormone deficiency may grow no more than two inches each year from the age of 2 to the beginning of puberty, even though they may look healthy in physical appearance. People who suffer HGH deficiency during childhood are said to be at greater risk of suffering from high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, kidney issues, loss of ovarian function and osteoporosis as adults. Children suffering from chronic kidney insufficiency commonly suffer from HGH deficiency as well.

Effects of HGH Insufficiency in Adults

Growth hormone deficiency is not a problem entirely peculiar to children; adults can suffer from it as well. It may be the result of genetic disorders such had suffered from birth. The deficiency could also result from brain tumors and treatment for certain cancers which inhibit the ability of the pituitary grand to produce HGH naturally. Adults suffering from muscle-wasting conditions, such as HIV/AIDS, and short bowel syndrome can have the HGH levels in their body quickly depleted as well. Possible symptoms of HGH insufficiency in adults include poor memory, low energy levels, issue with concentration, poor sexual performance, increased body fat, baldness (in men) and increased risk of suffering from life-threatening conditions such as cardiac issues.

Researchers have extensively shown that the levels of HGH in our bodies decline as we grow older. The drops are said to be as much as 25% by the time a person reaches his or her fifties. This contributes significantly to the onset of health problems and physical changes that are usually associated with aging, such as wrinkles, weight gain, low energy levels, gray hairs, diabetes, depression and low sex drive.

How Can HGH Help You Grow Taller?

Growth hormone helps to promote height through stimulation of bone and muscle growth. When HGH is secreted into the blood by the pituitary gland, it is carried to the liver where it stimulates the secretion of IGF-1, which in turn helps to produce material needed for formation of bone matrix. IGF-1 facilitates the growth and multiplication of the cells in the epiphyseal plate which can be found on either end of bones. This promotes improvement in the shape and length of bones. HGH also helps your body to retain calcium, which is an essential material for bone formation.

The extent of muscles in your body may also have a role to play in determining how tall you grow and growth hormone may help in this regard. HGH is said to bind to muscle cells with the aid of certain cell receptors, setting off reactions that assist in bulking muscle mass. You may end up growing both bigger and taller as a result of HGH use based on this view.

How is HGH Deficiency Treated in Children?

The treatment of choice for combating growth hormone deficiency in children has for long been HGH injections. Initially, these used to be made of growth hormone extracted from cadavers. The use of cadaver-extracted HGH was practiced from late 1950s until the late 1980s when the hormone started to be synthesized through the use of recombinant technology. Studies upon studies have recommended the use of synthetic hormone as an effective way of raising the HGH levels in children. But there are some important points you need to pay attention to before deciding on the use of biosynthetic HGH for addressing deficiency issues in your child.

  • It is advisable that a child be made to undergo HGH therapy for growth before he or she attains an age at which the growth plates become closed.
  • It is not recommended to have your child on HGH injections  such as Norditropin, Genotropin, Saizen and Nutropin if he or she has stopped growing or has normal HGH levels. The use of the injections in such situations leads to excess growth hormone levels in the body and this could possibly cause hardening of arteries and malformed bone and organ growth as well as heightened risk of high blood pressure and diabetes.
  • In the United States, HGH injections must be prescribed by a physician and they are very costly to access. It is said that the average amount spent on these injections range from $10,000 and $30,000 per year. Synthetic HGH may be obtained at a cheaper price and without a prescription on the black market, but there is no guarantee of such being effective or safe to use.
  • These potentially painful HGH injections are not without side effects and these range from minor to severe. The most common of these include spike in blood sugar levels, muscle and joint pains, mood swings, swelling and increased risk of infection. Synthetic HGH may also aggravate scoliosis, a condition characterized by curvature of the spine. Fatality is also a possibility in children suffering from Prader-Willi Syndrome and receiving HGH injections, especially when such are obese or suffering from breathing difficulty or a lung infection.

Limb-lengthening Surgery for Height Improvement in Adults

HGH injections may also be used to treat growth hormone deficiency and promote height in adults. However, the main interest of older people following this path is not to improve height, but more out of a desire to arrest signs of aging and build lean muscle mass. The most common method for enhancing height in adults with short stature is limb-lengthening surgery, a procedure which underlines how desperate some people can be to grow taller. It is not a new phenomenon having been around since the turn of 20th century.

Active natural growth in humans ceases before the age of 20 in many cases and this may sometimes leave a person with disproportionately short limbs. Limb-lengthening surgery is used to extend the length of such unusually short limbs. The methods used for these surgeries are usually classified into three main categories, namely: external, internal (or intraosseal) and combined (or mixed) methods.

The external methods are the most common. External fixators are either circular or straight bar devices which are attached to the bones with the aid of screws and wires or pins. The procedure entails either cutting or breaking the bone and then using external fixators to pull the soft tissues and bone apart. This is done gradually at a rate of around one millimeter a day. This process known as distraction facilitates formation of new skins, muscles, blood vessels, nerves and bones. It may take about three months to be completed. The procedure requires precision because pulling the bone apart too slowly could cause tissues and bone materials to harden before it is successfully completed and this can prevent further limb lengthening. Pulling the bone apart too quickly, on the other hand, could lead to muscle contraction and possible nerve paralysis.

Limb-lengthening surgeries may also involve implantation of a metal rod into the bone marrow cavity. After the bone is extended using an external fixator, the rod is secured to the new bone using screws. This technique enables the bone to consolidate (heal and harden) without an external fixator being present. Fully implantable nails and prostheses have been developed in recent years for this purpose. These are inserted inside the bone to extend the length. Although not suitable in all cases, implantable devices lessen feeling of pain and discomfort as well as diminish risk of infection. External fixators need to be turned manually for the bone to lengthen, but small twists and pressure achieve similar goal in the case of implantable devices.

Should you undergo limb-lengthening surgery?

Limb-lengthening surgery can be effective in helping you add few inches to your height. The length that will added to a person's height is not definite – this commonly ranges anywhere from two to four inches. There are few cases of those who have been reported to add up to six inches to their height. It must be noted that it is quite expensive having this surgery performed. You could expect to pay upwards of $85,000 to have one performed on you in the United States, where the number of specialists in this field is on the low side. Many interested individuals often travel to other countries, such as India, to access more affordable rates.

This procedure is best explored by those with disproportionately short limbs and dwarfism. When you consider the excruciating pain that accompanies limb-lengthening surgery, it will amaze you how people are willing to endure the painful surgery solely for cosmetic purposes. Some doctors claim that the surgical procedure is not overly painful and that pain can be easily controlled with the use of medications. They say there are rarely any complications. But many patients have described the experience as being unbearably painful. To worsen matters, doctors do not usually prescribe anti-inflammatory painkillers as doing this may hinder bone growth. It was noted in a study published in the journal International Orthopedics in 2006 that possible limb-lengthening surgery complications include hip problems, uneven lengthening, nerve damage and paralysis. These are said to occur frequently as well.

The main limb-lengthening surgery requires staying in the hospital for between one and three days. If an external fixator is the only device used, two months of treatment time for each centimeter of bone formed is expected. Your leg may be housed in a cast for some time to guard against bone breakage as well. X-ray examination will be carried out at regular intervals to assess the state of the bone – to see if sufficient calcium is present – before the fixator is removed. The cast may be placed over the leg for an additional month for extra protection after the fixator might have been taken off. Several months of physiotherapy would also be needed for total recovery. This essentially means you must have had a significant amount of money stacked up for your upkeep before embarking on this painful mission.

What Other Height Enhancement Options are Available to Adults?

Adequate sleep

It is advisable to endeavor to get quality sleep every night if you desire to grow taller, even though adding to your height through HGH effects may be considered a remote possibility once you have become an adult. Your body is most active in producing growth hormone while you are having a restful sleep, provided your pituitary gland is in a good state. It follows then that you experience a drop in your HGH level when you are not getting adequate sleep. It has been suggested in some studies that growth hormone level in the body surges around an hour into your nightly sleep.

Exercise and diet

It is argued that when intensive anaerobic, stretching and strengthening exercises are combined with healthy diet and lifestyle the muscles can be stimulated to release lactic acid which promotes natural production of growth hormone in the body. These exercises include swimming, bicycle riding and weight training. They boost HGH levels for enhanced growth and strengthening of cells which lend a hand in bone remodeling and lengthening when they are dumped on old bones. HGH may enhance the growth of cartilage around bone ends to support cell development and guard against cartilage disappearance as new bone is formed. In addition to improving height, boosting HGH levels may help with your overall health as well as delay onset of aging signs. It is even said that it can help fire up your sexual drive.

HGH supplements

As effective as exercises can be in raising the level of growth hormone in your body, they may not be able to singlehandedly generate the amount that could really be sufficient to improve your height. You will likely need to find other ways to supplement the amount of hormone in your body. HGH injections offer the most effective means of doing this. But since these injections do not come cheap and could in fact produce side effects, you may want to consider using HGH supplements or releasers such as Genf20 Plus, Genfx, HGH Energizer, Somatropinne, Sytropin and Provacyl. These stimulate the pituitary gland to produce more HGH naturally.

What then is the best way to increase your height?

HGH can be very helpful in improving the heights of children, but there is really no guarantee that this will be the case in adults. Exercises, a healthy diet and use of  HGH supplements like Genf20 Plus, HGF Max, Somatropin and Growth Factor Plus are more likely to help you live healthier and maintain a youthful appearance than increase your height as an older person. The expensive and excruciatingly painful limb-lengthening surgery may be your best bet for adding a couple more inches to your height as an adult. You will do well to first discuss with your doctor whatever options you may be considering before going ahead.
