Andropause: What You Should Know!

It is normal for people to experience certain bodily changes as they get older. Hormone levels dip and certain processes become less efficient. Menopause embodies a significant proportion of these changes. But women are often thought as the only ones to lose sleep about this condition. This is not true. Men also have their special form of menopause to deal with. It is known as andropause. Read on to learn more about this male menopause and what you can do, as a man, to control it.

Andropause – what’s to know?

Yes, the term "andropause" may sound new to you, but probably not for what you think it stands for. It merely describes the decline that many men experience in their testosterone levels as they get older. Male menopause connotes a drop in male hormone levels as a result of getting older. It is mostly a problem among men who are 50 years of age or older. The condition is sometimes associated to hypogonadism. Estimates have it that testosterone levels fall roughly 10 percent every 10 years after the age of 30.

While they may share certain similarities, andropause is not exactly the same as female menopause. Experts say that some men will not experience any problematic symptoms from the onset of andropause. It is estimated that roughly 30 percent of men aged 50 or above will experience andropause symptoms due to low T. Also, the drops in testosterone levels are not as sudden as declines in hormone levels usually are in women.

Andropause symptoms

The symptoms of male menopause differ. They vary between individuals. But these effects do range from the physical to the psychological. Possible symptoms of andropause include:

Other possible complications of andropause include reduction in testicle size, loss of body hair and development of breasts (gynecomastia). Andropause may lead to erectile dysfunction, infertility, osteoporosis, and greater risk of cardiovascular issues.

Causes of Andropause

There is absolutely nothing unusual about the level of testosterone falling as men get older. The only problem is when this leads to troubling symptoms. The fact that the production of male hormone declines as men get older is only a part of the problem. Perhaps, another more upsetting thing is the presence of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). The level of this hormone starts to rise with age and it binds to available testosterone in the blood. This reduces the availability of the male hormone.

As a result, tissues that are reliant on testosterone to function properly will suffer. Andropause symptoms will then arise from the reduced amount of bioavailable testosterone in the blood.

How is the condition diagnosed?

Men often tend to be rather sensitive about discussing their sexual health issues with anyone. They feel shy or somewhat intimidated to even discuss these with their doctors. You need to look past these sentiments if you are really interested in stopping andropause symptoms in their tracks.

Your doctor will ask you questions on whatever symptoms you may be noticing. But some of these signs are not peculiar to male menopause. So there may be need for you to have blood tests done to rule out other possible conditions, including high blood pressure and hypogonadism. The tests will, of course, include evaluation of the level of testosterone in your blood.

Treatment of andropause symptoms

Since male menopause is a problem of low T levels, it stands to reason that replacing the male hormone should do the magic. You will find below some of the options that may be suggested by your doctor and other knowledgeable individuals.

Hormone replacement therapy

You can find testosterone products in a variety of forms. The best form can only be determined by a doctor, so you need to work with one on that.

Injections – These are arguably the most effective means of replacing testosterone. The injections (testosterone cypionate or testosterone ananthate) are administered into the muscles every two or four weeks. These have potential side effects and, as such, should only be given under the guidance of a professional. Testosterone injections are seen in the same controversial light as performance-enhancing substances.

Capsules – It may also be suggested to take testosterone in capsule form. The capsules are usually to be taken two times per day after meals. These are not ideal for people with high amount of blood calcium, those with poor liver function, or certain other conditions.

Patches – You can also get testosterone supplementation as skin patches. These are applied to a dry part of the skin once a day. The mechanism lets the male hormone to be released into the bloodstream slowly and steadily round the clock.

Gels – You are to apply this treatment directly to your skin, the arms in particular. Special caution is advised in the use of testosterone gel by reason of the application by hand. The advice is to always wash your hands after usage to prevent contact with the skin of others.

Lifestyle changes To Combat Andropause Symptoms

In many cases, doctors may only recommend making some lifestyle changes to deal with andropause. You will be advised to embrace healthier lifestyle choices such as:

  • Keeping a healthy diet
  • Exercising regularly
  • Getting regular, restful sleep
  • Keeping stress under control

Some men do experience improvement in their andropause symptoms after making relevant changes in their lifestyle.

Andropause Natural supplements

We have to say that not every man will qualify for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). Besides, the risks associated with it may not make it worthwhile. And for that reason, you may wish to look towards natural supplements that could be potentially beneficial for andropause. These don't introduce testosterone into the body, but rather stimulate its natural production. You can easily get them over the counter.

Provacyl

Provacyl – This is a good example of an all-natural remedy targeted at this condition. It features a blend of ingredients that can help to fight andropause symptoms and enhance male sexual health. Among its notable ingredients are GABA, Gingko biloba, DHEA, L-Arginine, Muira puama, chaste berry, Tyrosine, and Panax ginseng. This makes Provacyl not only efficacious but also safe.

VigRX Plus – Many people know this as a very potent male enhancer. Just like Provacyl, VigRX Plus contains a fine blend of powerful natural ingredients. The two appears to have couple of ingredients in common. It may be said that this supplement is not exactly geared towards andropause issues. But it can help with several of the condition's symptoms. These include erectile dysfunction, low libido, lack of energy, and loss of muscle mass.

If you suspect you may be having male menopause issues, you should consult your doctor for guidance. There are different treatment options for andropause, mainly involving testosterone replacement. But these do have side effects associated, making certain precautions necessary. Provacyl and VigRX Plus are two of the popular all-natural remedies that may interest you on efficacy and safety.
