11 Reasons You Can’t Maintain Erection Long Enough

There are many men out there who battle with achieving and keeping an erection when they are in the bedroom. The issue may only affect some once in a while but, for others, this is a constant thing. It goes without saying that the problem can be troubling.

Do you find it hard to get and keep an erection? You are obviously not alone. Questions on possible causes of this issue, more formally known as erectile dysfunction, are common. In this article, you will find out why some men are unable to maintain an erection long enough.

  1. Stress

When men report having erection problems, it is not improbable to hear some doctors say the issue is in the head. This suggests that psychological factors are responsible. Notable among these is stress.

All of us experience stress. There are numerous things that can be responsible for it. And estimates suggest that this is cause of about 1 in every 5 cases of erectile dysfunction. It is actually easy to accept that you find it tougher to get or maintain an erection when you mind is troubled.

Sexual problems are probably among the least of your worries with stress. This mental health issue is associated with many conditions, including chest pain, insomnia, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

  1. Tiredness

Here is another rather obvious reason why some men are unable to maintain an erection long enough. So, if you found that you are tired most of the time, this may be reason you can’t get it up.

This is more likely to explain your erection issue if your job is the type that often leaves you completely drained by the end of the day. It could also be the problem if your schedule doesn’t allow you sufficient hours for sleep.

  1. Recreational Drugs

Men who use recreational drugs, such as heroin or cocaine, may experience erectile dysfunction as a side effect. Even marijuana, which many think to be helpful in bed, has been found to be possibly capable of causing erection problems.

Some researchers found that ED is more common – about three times so – among daily users of marijuana. It is anybody’s guess what harm other, more addictive banned drugs can do.

Recreational drugs can make it more tasking on your heart to efficiently pump blood throughout your body, including your penis.

  1. Smoking

Men who smoke do harm to their ability to perform in the bedroom – yet, many of such do not know this. Smoking adversely affects blood circulation in your body. This creates problem with getting sufficient blood to the penis to make it turgid and erect.

You run the risk of damage to blood vessels when you smoke, and not only in your penis. Research suggests that about 2 in every 5 men with ED are smokers! This shows how significantly it can contribute to the problem.

  1. Alcohol

Most men and alcohol are inseparable. In fact, relaxation or fun is not complete when there are no bottles or cans of beer around.

But drinking too much alcohol can make it hard to get and maintain an erection long enough for sexual activity. Chronic drinkers are prone to serious erection problems. Research shows that up to 70 percent of heavy drinkers have permanent ED!

Even if you are not one, you may find it extra hard after having too much to drink.

  1. Performance Anxiety

There are cases where some men are unable to maintain an erection long enough because of being anxious about bedroom activity. They worry too much about what and what to do to ensure they satisfy their partners in bed. In the end, they may lose the ability to even maintain an erection.

Performance anxiety is very less of an issue to experienced men. It is more common among younger greenhorns.

  1. Obesity

Modern society is currently battling serious obesity crisis. It is no wonder then that more men appears to be battling with erection challenges.

Overweight or obese individuals have too much fats and cholesterol in their body. The arteries of men with these issues can become clogged. This is capable of hindering the flow of blood to the penis.

Excessive fat and cholesterol can lead to more serious issues, such as hypertension and heart disease.

  1. Diabetes

People with diabetes have elevated blood sugar and can experience damage to nerves. The condition can cause damage to blood vessels and nerves in the penis. As a result, there is a disruption in blood flow.

Estimate has it that roughly half, or more, of men with diabetes have erectile dysfunction. This is especially more so among those who have had elevated blood sugar for at least 10 years.

  1. Medications

Erection problem can be a side effect of certain drugs you may be taking. Anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications such as Valium, Prozac, and Zoloft, are among possible culprits.

Other medications that may also make it tougher for you to have or maintain an erection include blood pressure drugs (beta blockers, in particular), antihistamines, and drugs for treating heartburn.

  1. Miscellaneous Disorders

A variety of other medical conditions can cause a man to find it difficult maintaining an erection. For instance, researchers have found that erectile dysfunction in young men may be an early sign of cardiovascular disease.

Erection problems can point to the following disorders, among others:

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Nerve damage
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Thyroid problems
  • Stroke
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  1. Relationship Issues

Sometimes, problems with partners may be why some men are unable to maintain erection long enough. It is actually easy to understand this one. If you are not on good terms with your spouse, how likely are you to want to have sex? You may not think in that direction at all! Even if you wanted to, she probably won’t what that.

There is obviously little or nothing to excite an erection if all you do most of the time is fight or argue with your partner.

How About Aging?

Some people consider aging a factor as to why men can’t maintain an erection long enough for sexual activity. In other words, they think you can develop it as you get older, as part of the natural aging process.

Medical experts don’t agree with that view. Aging is not a cause of erectile dysfunction. The condition is only common among older people. Perhaps, one may think of it as a risk factor.

The National Institutes of Health says about 17 percent of men in their 60s have erection problems, compared to 4 percent of those in their 50s. Around 50 percent of those older than 75 years can’t maintain an erection.

How Do You Address It?

In some cases, lifestyle changes may be all you need to improve your ability to have and maintain an erection. You will need to avoid those things that encourage the problem, including smoking and alcohol consumption.

The following may also help:

Medications – Prescription drugs are commonly recommended for treating erection issues. The most notable are Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. These medications help to improve the flow of blood to your penis to promote erection. They are also said to help with issues arising from performance anxiety.

Counseling – This is more appropriate for men whose causes of erection problem is psychological. Counseling may be beneficial when stress, emotional, or relationship challenges are at the base of the problem.

Supplements – Certain herbs have been found to exhibit similar effect as ED drugs by improving the flow of blood to the penis. You can check out a good supplement that blends such herbs in its formula. Good examples of such include VigRX Plus and Male Extra.

There are also special devices that are used to pump or draw blood into the penis to promote erection.

Conclusion

Lifestyle choices are a big factor in why some men are unable to maintain an erection long enough. Smoking, excessive alcohol intake and the use of recreational drugs are some possible reasons. Taking steps to address those can help you feel better.

However, erectile dysfunction can be a sign of more serious medical conditions. It may resolve once you take steps to deal with such disorder. You should discuss with your doctor for assistance. It is also important to have your medications checked in case they are responsible.

Get counseling if you suspect emotional or psychological causes. It may also help to discuss your erection problem with your partner. While you can treat erection problems with medications, supplements can also be helpful and safer as well.
